  DIVISION OF NEPHROLOGY

  Research

The Division participates in the conduct of several large and prestigious clinical trials including ALLHAT, AASK and the Collaborative Study of Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Faculty publish 5-6 research papers per year and deliver a number of invited lectures at regional and national meetings. There is an ongoing NIH institutional training grant in hypertension and renal disease for postdoctoral PhD and MD candidates (3-4/year). Two predoctoral students may also conduct supervised research for 1-2 years and receive a stipend.

Currently, the Division is conducting basic research into mechanisms of renal/vascular injury associated with cocaine abuse in animal models and cell culture experiment. In addition, the role of gamma MSH as a natriuretic peptide in salt-sensitive hypertension is being investigated in a collaborative effort with our Division of Pediatric Nephrology. Gangarishi Chandramohan, M.D., (Chief, Pediatric Nephrology, King-Drew Medical Center), was awarded an American Heart Association Grant in aid to study gamma MSH and employ a full-time PHD (Dr. Ramraj) in pursuit of these studies.
