  DIVISION OF NEPHROLOGY

  Educational Programs

  Fellowship Program

The Division offers fellowship training in clinical nephrology under the combined San Fernando/UCLA Nephrology training program, wherein trainees rotate on the Renal Transplant Service at UCLA Center for the Health Sciences and work on the Consultation Service at Olive View Medical Center. The majority of their time is spent on the Renal Service at KDMC, which features a clinically rich mixture of acute and chronic renal failure cases, hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), continuous renal replacement therapy (CVVHDF), renal biopsy, hypertension and obstetrical/urologic related renal problems. Four full-time faculty supervise the trainees and weekly renal conferences, journal club and research seminars enrich the academic experience. In addition, up to four research fellows are undergoing NIH-funded training in renal and hypertension research at King/Drew and the Sepulveda VA Medical Center.

Residency Training

Internal Medicine senior residents rotate on the Nephrology Consultation service. They evaluate all in and out patients where expert consultation is requested. The house staff are supervised by the nephrology fellow and faculty on service to maximize their educational experience.

Medical Student Training

Nephrology is offered as a three-week elective in the fourth year of medical education for 300 level course credit. Medical students enrolled in the Drew UCLA Medical Education program may choose Nephrology as part of their Medicine selective options required by the Drew Urban Underserved College.
