The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension offers fellowship training in clinical nephrology under the combined San Fernando/UCLA Nephrology training program, wherein trainees rotate on the Renal Transplant Service at UCLA Center for the Health Sciences and work on the Consultation Service at Olive View Medical Center. The majority of their time is spent on the Renal Service at KDMC, which features a clinically rich mixture of acute and chronic renal failure cases, hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), continuous renal replacement therapy (CVVHDF), renal biopsy, hypertension and obstetrical/urologic related renal problems. Educational activities include weekly renal conferences, journal club and research seminars enrich the academic experience. In addition, up to four research fellows are undergoing NIH-funded training in renal and hypertension research at King/Drew and the Sepulveda VA Medical Center. Faculty publish 5-6 research papers per year and deliver a number of invited lectures at regional and national meetings. The Division has also participated in the conduct of several large and prestigious clinical trials including ALLHAT, AASK and the Collaborative Study of Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. |
