  Accreditation Status:  The Internal Medicine Program is fully accredited since August 2004 by the Residency Review Committee. Our next site visit will be August 2006.

  Calls/Shifts:
 
  1. PGY-I
    • The team is on-call Q 5 days. The intern is long call Q 10 to 15 days (depending on 2 or 3 intern ward team) .
    • Q 3-5 days for MICU, CCU and cross-coverage for the units by subspecialty services.
    • Float works 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM (Mon-Fri) for about 2 weeks.
    • ER : 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM (Two days on & two days off)
  2. PGY-II
    • Wards Q 5 days
    • MICU & CCU Q3-7 days
    • ER 4:00 PM-12:00 AM (Mon-Fri)
  3. PGY-III
    • Wards Q 5 days
    • MICU 1-2 calls per week
    • Emergency Medicine Consult coverage by primary team (12 hour shift day/night) and secondary night/weekend coverage by subspecialty services (1 weekend of the month and once/week)
  Ancillary Services:
 
  • Standard services available per county policy
  • All doctors orders are documented via a computerized system
  • All Laboratory, Pathology and Radiology results are computerized
  • There are escort services available for patients

Continuity Clinic: One afternoon a week, designed to allow the residents to follow their own patients in a continuous basis

  • PGY-I (3-5 patients/afternoon)
  • PGY-2 (4-6 patients/afternoon)
  • PGY-3 (>4 patients/afternoon)

Supervision:

  • We are on of the few Internal Medicine Programs that has 24/7 supervision by faculty
  • Night hospitalist since July 2000 ( 7:00 PM-7:00 AM)

Didactic Activities:

  1. Morning Report
    • Coordinated by the Chief Resident/Faculty
    • Mondays & Thursdays and Fridays 8:00 AM
    • The PGY-I or Medical students present cases
    • The PGY-II or III responsible for the case prepares comments
    • A minimum of two assigned faculty attend the conference
  2. Morbidity & Mortality
    • Coordinated by the Chief Resident/Faculty
    • Wednesdays 8:00-9:00 AM
    • PGY-II & III present cases
    • Residents do not present their own cases (serves as medical record peer review)
    • Session moderated by DIM vice chairs and other interested faculty
  3. MKSAP Review (Board Review)
    • Coordinated by the Program Director & the Associate Program Director
    • Replace some lecture time slots or evening sessions
    • Different sections assigned every month
  4. Noon Lectures Room 4009
    • Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon
      4th Monday is Hematology/Oncology Grand Rounds
    • Wednesdays:

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

  • Passing rate is over 90% average over the past three years
  • Preparation for ABIM:
    1. Regular MKSAP Reviews
    2. Two concentrated Review one before the National In-Services Examination and the other before the actual ABIM
    3. In-Training Monthly Examination
    4. Tutoring system by the Leading Faculty members for PGY-III
    5. This year we decided to extend the tutoring to the PGY-I & II who need help

Research

  • Requirement for graduation
  • Faculty Director for Resident Research: Behrouz Salehian, M.D
  • Research mentor assignment
  • Research Club Meeting once a month
  • Opportunity to present at scholarly forums
  • Travel expenses covered up to $ 500 per resident every year

Residents Counseling

  • Counseling provided as required
  • Faculty Mentors are assigned to all house-staff (mentor-mentee meetings occur 2-3 time a year)
Joint Committee for Interns and Residents (JCIR)
  • Our program is in 100% compliance with JCIR requirements
  • No more than 24 hours of continuous call, with 6 additional hours for patient follow-up care
  • Calls not more often than Q 3 days
  • No more than 80 working hours per week
  • One day off in 7 days on average
