  DIVISION OF GERIATRICS

  Geriatric Services

The Division of Geriatrics at King/Drew Medical Center (KDMC) provides essential health care services for the elderly residents of South Central Los Angeles and neighboring areas. These services are offered at KDMC, Hubert Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center (HHCHC) and at selected Senior Centers throughout the City of Los Angeles. All seniors are welcome. At our clinics, we provide complete medical examinations as well as comprehensive geriatric assessments performed by the faculty and staff of KDMC. Laboratory, X-ray facilities, and subspecialty referrals are located mostly on site.

Because we know that the seniors need special consideration our clinic minimizes their waiting time in the clinic and offers expedient testing. Appointments are also made within a reasonable time, often within one week. The following are brief descriptions of our services:
  1. Outpatient Services

The HHCHC Geriatric Clinic is a primary care clinic serving elderly patients 65 years of age and above. Patients are screened medically and functionally and a comprehensive geriatric assessment is done on selected patients who have been identified to have problems with the initial screening. A multidisciplinary approach is emphasized.

Clinic hours: Monday, Thursday, and Fridays 8 AM - Noon

  2. Inpatient Services

The Acute Geriatric Unit/Service is located at KDMC on 3B. The Patients are admitted directly from ER, Outpatient Clinics or transferred from other services including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, etc. All patients 65 years and older with acute medical problems may be referred for transfer to the geriatric unit.
  3. Outreach Health Screening

The Outreach Clinics are on-site health screenings for elderly residents in the community delivered at local senior centers. This is a project funded through the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging and currently serves about 10 senior centers throughout LA County. This is a service-oriented project, and the elderly patients are screened for uncontrolled medical and functional problems and referred to their personal physician or to a physician in their vicinity if they do not have one for follow-up care.
  4. Heart Program

This is a joint Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Program between the County and APS (Adult Protective Services). The HEART (Halting Elder Abuse Response Team) is a screening and intervention program with hospital and community staff working together. Fellows, residents and students rotate through this service and learn the basic issues of elder and dependent adult abuse.
