  The Division conducts a broad array of research projects including basic science, clinical research and retrospective reviews.

Clinical, Case Studies and Reviews
  1. The effect of lead on hypertension using patients from the African American Kidney Disease study. This study looks at patients with hypertension without kidney disease to see if lead levels are higher.(Dr. Martins)
  2. HIV and coronary artery disease. This study is to determine if the prevalence of coronary artery disease is higher in patients with HIV infection who are on protease inhibitors, i.e. do protease inhibitors lead to coronary artery disease.(Dr. Matin)
  3. Effects of pioglitazone (Actos) on visceral obesity. (NIH funded study) (Dr. Salehian)
  4. Is there a relationship between body mass index (BMI) and co-morbid conditions? This study aims to look at whether or not the BMI index is associated with hypertension, coronary artery disease, increased cholesterol or diabetes. (Dr. Hanna)
  5. Lipid levels and the management of coronary artery disease. This study involves a secondary analysis of a data base to determine if patients with coronary artery disease are receiving adequate lipid lowering therapy.(Drs. Asuncion and Ganesan)
  6. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome in Elderly African Americans. An epidemiologic and clinical review including prevention and treatment. (Dr. Funnyé)
  7. The importance of HIV subtypes. A case study and review. (Dr. Funnyé)
