  DIVISION OF GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE

  Educational Programs

  Student Primary Care Program

The Division is intimately involved with all aspects of the student primary care program including supplying most of the faculty from Internal Medicine to act as preceptors at the student primary care clinic and participating in clinical conferences, didactic lectures and research seminars.

Lectures

The Division participates in the Clerkship lecture series, the noon lecture series and the board review components that involve General Internal Medicine. Participation in Grand Rounds and Journal Club are other activities of the Division. As noted previously, we are intimately involved with the Student Primary Care Program and participate in the didactic lecture series, and the weekly conference series. In addition, we have a Divisional lecture series twice monthly devoted to issues of consultation, peri-operative care and general medical topics of interest to house staff. As part of the consultation rotation there are lectures, case studies and case reports.

Hospitalists

Hospitalists are involved in supervision of house staff at night for emergency medical consultation (EMC) and admissions to the hospital. They determine the appropriateness of admissions and insure that the appropriate initial assessment and management is implemented. They insure that a written admitting note is done by the admitting (EMC) resident and reviews this note with the resident. This serves as an opportunity to discuss cases and utilize "teaching moments to reinforce concepts and impart knowledge to house staff. Hospitalists interface with the Emergency Department and other departments as needed to insure efficient and appropriate care. They serve as consultants to other services on an emergent basis and are available for supervision of the admitting ward resident as needed.
