  ABOUT US

  Background Information:
Born out of the ashes of the Watts Rebellion, Charles Drew Postgraduate School was founded in 1966 in response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the area. The institution later became a University and changed its name in 1987 to reflect its expanded academic role and identity. Emphasizing service to the community, the University draws inspiration from the life of Dr. Charles Drew.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. General Hospital was opened in response to health care disparities in minority population of South Central Los Angeles and supported by the County of Los Angeles. The hospital provides a wide range of health services for the community, in addition to serving as a training facility for residency programs.

The Department of Family Medicine was founded in 1976 and first group of residents graduated in 1979.

  Mission
Our mission is conduct education, patient care and research in a culturally sensitive environment to our underserved population.
