General Information
The Martin Luther King/Charles Drew Medical Center is comprised of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital and the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. The King/Drew Medical Center covers a 94 square-mile area and serves over 1.2 million people, a population comprised mainly of people of color in a community that is culturally diverse and economically depressed.

Martin Luther King Hospital is licensed for 480 beds; the Center has approximately 3,500 employees, which includes over 300 resident physicians training in 14 approved clinical programs. The Medical Center, the only Level One trauma center in the region, operates a paramedic base station and emergency heliport. As one of only 12 trauma centers in Los Angeles County, we manage over 20% of all trauma cases in the Los Angeles County area. The Department of Anesthesiology residency program at King/Drew Medical Center has been accredited since 1972. The Goals of the Program are:

  • To train you to attain Excellence in your performance as a Physician
  • To train you to give Comprehensive and Compassionate medical care to all Patients
  • To train you in the Ethical practices of Medicine
  • To train you to become a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology
The residency program qualifies the candidate for examination by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

The residency consists of four or three years of clinical and didactic teaching. The four year period of training consists of, if required, a Fast Track Internship, in which the resident completes 8 months of internship training, then enters anesthesia training for 8 months after which the remaining 4 months of their internship is completed. However, if an applicant enters at the CAY I level of training he/she will immediately begin a 12-month anesthesia-training period. Also, a Mentor Program exists to provide guidance and support from the faculty members and upper residents In addition to the training received at King/Drew Medical Center, our residents also rotate, for additional training at our affiliated training sites during their CAY II – III years. The sites include:
  1. Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles (Pediatric Anesthesia)
  2. Cedars-Sinai Hospital (Cardiovascular Anesthesia, OB Anesthesia and Chronic Pain)
  3. UCLA/Harbor (Critical Care)
Mock Oral Examinations and Human Patient Simulator Training is performed at UCLA and KDMC with the Department of Anesthesiology.

The four-year clinical anesthesia-training program follows the guidelines of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
