CDU and External Scholarships

CDU Scholarships are designed to help alleviate the financial burden of a health professions education. Students are encouraged to apply for both CDU and external scholarships. As you look through the list below please keep in mind that even though some of the deadlines for the scholarships have passed, many of them are annual awards with the same deadline each year. If the scholarship is a good fit for you, make note of its deadline so you can apply the following year. For CDU scholarships, students must complete and submit the CDU Scholarship Application and additional requirements as detailed within the eligibility requirements section of each scholarship listed below.

Emma and Joe Adams Scholarship

The Emma and Joe Adams Scholarship is open to CDU students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON).

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Priority consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need
  • Submit a brief biography
  • Submit a personal photo not larger than 3 ½ x 5 for including in the report to donors (if awarded). 

Scholarship Award: $1,000
Number of Awards:  up to 10

Graduate Education Scholarship

The Graduate Education Scholarship is designed to help close the ‘unmet need’ gap which is often a barrier to success for academically qualified graduate students. This scholarship is open to graduate students only in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON). Funding for this scholarship is provided by the U.S. Department of Education Title III Program.

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Priority consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need
  • Candidates must have had completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the time of this scholarship application.

Scholarship Award: $5,000
Number of Awards: up to 14

Haynes Family

The Haynes Family Scholarship is open to CDU students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON).

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Priority consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need
  • Candidates must have had completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the time of this scholarship application.
  • Submit a personal photo not larger than 3 ½ x 5 for including in the report to donors (if awarded).

Academic Achievement Scholarship

The Academic Achievement Scholarship is a tuition credit scholarship open to incoming transfer students to the CDU undergraduate program. Consideration is given to academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum within the context of a student’s academic environment.

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Additional statement describing involvement in leadership, community service, special talents, first generation college status, and academic achievement under difficult circumstances

Academic Merit Scholarship

The Academic Merit Scholarship is a tuition credit scholarship open to incoming transfer students to the CDU undergraduate program.

Additional Criteria

  • Consideration is based on SAT or ACT scores. Minimum eligibility requirements include:
  • Achieve a combined SAT Math and SAT Critical Reading score of at least 1300 with a test score of at least 600 in each of these components, or
  • Achieve a composite ACT score of at least 30 with a test score of at least 27in ACT Math and ACT Science

Cedars-Sinai Scholarship

The Cedars-Sinai Scholarship is open to CDU students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON).

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Priority consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need
  • Submit a personal photo not larger than 3 ½ x 5 for including in the report to donors (if awarded). 

Scholarship Award: $2,000
Number of Awards: up to 5

William Hearst Scholarship

The William Hearst Scholarship is available for full-time students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), with an academic GPA standing of 3.0 or higher, who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in a student organization.

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Include a separate statement addressing involvement in student organizations
  • 3 letters of recommendation (from the candidate’s academic program, university and dean)

Scholarship Award: $5,000
Number of Awards: up to 2

AT&T and Matching Fund

The AT&T and Matching Fund scholarship is available for full-time students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), with an academic GPA standing of 3.0 or higher, who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in a student organization.

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Include a separate statement addressing involvement in student organizations
  • 3 letters of recommendation (from the candidate’s academic program, university and dean)

Scholarship Award: $5,000
Number of Awards: up to 10

James Irvine Foundation

The James Irvine Foundation Scholarship is open to CDU students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON) with a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Continuing students of College of Medicine (COM) are required to submit a recommendation letter from the dean in lieu of the GPA requirement. Priority consideration is given to students who demonstrate financial need as well as maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

Additional Criteria/ Documentation

  • Include a separate statement addressing how you demonstrated outstanding service to underserve communities
  • Submit a personal photo not larger than 3 ½ x 5 for including in the report to donors (if awarded). 

Scholarship Award: $10,000
Number of Awards: 1

Annie and Willie Foundation Scholarship

The Annie and Willie Scholarship is open to CDU students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON). Of the two scholarships, one is a general scholarship and the other should give priority to a physically-challenged/mobility-impaired or re-entry student. Priority consideration is given to students who demonstrate financial need as well as maintaining satisfactory academic progress. If scholarship recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress in his or her second year, an additional $3,000 scholarship will be awarded.

Scholarship Award: Two 2-year $3,000 awards
