Jaime Contreras represents the student body of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science on the Board of Trustees. Born in Colombia, Jaime came to the United States as a young child. After completing his undergraduate degree focused on business and finance at USC and working initially as a financial advisor, Jaime fell in love with medicine through volunteering at a hospital and serving as an EMT in an LA area where his bilingualism and desire to help people in need proved critical.
Having developed a desire to expand his scope of medical practice, Jaime sought multiple options including applying to Post-Baccalaureate programs. He ultimately found CDU – and notably its mission statement and priorities – to be a perfect fit for his goals, values and envisioned future.
After CDU accepted him into its family, Jaime became involved with many organizations. In 2012, he joined the student ambassador leadership program and began serving as Treasurer for the Pre-Health Society. The following year, Jaime became a member of the Western Association of Schools in Colleges Academic Infrastructure Committee.
Jaime is currently conducting research as a lab assistant at the Augustus F. Hawkins building with Drs. Jorge Artaza and Monica Ferrini in the Department of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology Division. Through this research and together with his group, Jaime has submitted for publication entitled “1,25-Vitamin-D3 Promotes Cardiac Differentiation Through Modulation of the Wnt Signaling Pathway.”
He is also Chapter Founding Member for the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honors Society at CDU, and has received awards from the University for academic excellence.
As the judicial affairs representative of the CDU Student Government Executive Board, a clinical care extender for the Queen of the Valley hospital in West Covina, and a mentor in the CDU Carver Elementary Science Enrichment Program, Jaime has clearly proven his commitment to and enthusiasm for the community of medicine. Moreover, he strives to continue pursuing his true passion: improving medical care in underserved areas and seeing the positive results of his contributions.
