Drew University thanks
Roland Betts, the members of the program and production committees, the numerous volunteers, our sponsors, the vendors and organizations with booths, and all those attendees who made the 15th Annual Jazz at Drew event a wonderful success. Most people |
| |
thought this was the best Jazz at Drew ever. We also want to thank Drew’s RCMI Program for honoring Retired Congressman Louis Stokes and
Dr. Sydney McNair of NIH during Jazz at Drew for their contributions toward
supporting research and funding of programs focused on minority health
and health disparities. |

- Upon the recent announcement of the retirement of Dr. Harry Douglas, the University thanks him for the many years of service, his numerous contributions toward excellence in education and
training, and his leadership of Drew in his capacities as Dean, College of Allied Health (now called College of Science and Health), Executive Vice President, and Interim President. In honoring
Dr. Douglas, the College of Science and Health has established an endowed annual lectureship in his name, which will bring in nationally renown educators and leaders to speak at Drew. In lieu of a reception for his retirement, Dr. Douglas requested these funds to be placed in
the endowment for the lectureship in his name. This is a wonderful gesture on behalf of Dr. Douglas, and indicates his perpetual commitment and loyalty to Drew University. Happy retirement, Dr. Douglas!

- King-Drew Medical Center will be facing
serious challenges as it prepares for a survey by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS provides $200 million of funding to the medical center (about half of its operating budget). Failure to receive full certification by CMS will jeopardize the very existence of the hospital, which would adversely impact Drew University. The survey is anticipated to occur some time between December 2005 and January 2006. All College of Medicine faculty and other hospital staff as well as residents must work together and ensure KDMC is compliant with all standards and requirements. Our future is dependent on a successful survey.

- The Dermatology residency program in the Department of Internal Medicine received a full 5-year accreditation (the maximum number of years allowed) without any citations or concerns. Congratulations to Dr. Paul Kelly, his staff and residents, and those in the GME office who made all this possible.
|
| |
- Congratulations also to the Department of Internal Medicine resident graduates of July 2005. All 13 graduates took their internal medicine board certification examination in August 2005 and 12 of them passed (92% pass rate). We are proud of their achievement. Credit must be given to the program directors, Dr. Cesar Aranguri, Dr. Nancy Hanna (who is now Associate Dean for GME), and Dr. Deborah Moran.
