A tribute to Mrs. Mobley’s from student body president

Meeting a Giant

I am a first year graduate student in the Master’s of Public Health program. I am from Decatur, Georgia. It may have taken me a little while to adjust to graduate life, the West Coast, and the time difference. But, one thing’s for sure, it did not take very long for me to learn the history of my new school,
The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science.

The Charles Drew University has a unique history. It was birth out of protest, unrest, and the search for equality in healthcare. In that history you can not overlook the people that help start the school. Whether you are on campus or off-campus, if you overhear someone talk about the history of this great institution of higher education, you will hear this name proudly said. That name is Mrs. Mobley (pronounced mismobley). She is an icon of the school and a pillar in the community.  She was selfless in fighting for this school and

hospital. She was a catalyst, a visionary, and fighter. Mrs. Mobley fought hard to establish this school. I am a product of her seeds of diligence and hard work that she sewed over 40 years ago.

June 2, 2007 is a day that is etched into my memory. It was a poignant moment for me, as a student.  That is the day that I met the revered and highly acclaimed Mrs. Mobley.  It is significant to Mrs. Mobley as well, because, that is also the same day that she received an honorary doctorate from the University. Words can not explain the joy I felt at that moment. She was so warm, kind, and genuine. She greeted me with a smile and kiss on the cheek. It was as if I had known her for some time.  I felt like her grandchild that lives far away, and every time we meet she is elated to see me.  I was honored to have met Dr. Mobley, Mrs. Mobley. Right then I believed I reached the highest level of school spirit and pride. I met a forerunner of this great institution of learning, my institution.  I liken Charles Drew University to a small, but powerful sports car.  Size does not matter in this instance.  Performance, exemplified by 41 years of highly trained and respected healthcare professionals, is what matters.  I thought of all of the lives that have been saved and birthed because of Mrs. Mobley’s vision and tenacity.  I am humbled and honored to have met Mrs. Mobley. I met [herstory].

Thank you Mrs. Mobley for all that you have done.  I am proud to be a Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science student.
