Mrs. Lillian Harkness Mobley and Dr. Susan Kelly
On June 2nd 2007, at its Annual Commencement Ceremony, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science proudly awarded, to Mrs. Lillian Harkness Mobley, the Doctor of Humane Letters for Service and Achievement.  This Honorary Degree is given to individuals who merit special recognition and is the highest honor awarded by the university.  Dr. Mobley’s deep commitment to the Charles Drew University for more than 40 years is evidenced by her participation on many boards including her leadership role in the first discussions to found the university and later her Chairmanship on the Community Advisory Council to the President,

and as a trustee on the Board of Trustees.  The proof of her vast interest and concern for human life is everywhere.  The former King/Drew Medical Center, now MLK-Harbor Hospital, owes its existence to the fact that she and a small group of others saw the need and were willing to make the sacrifices to make the dream a reality.  The Charles Drew University now operates successful international programs in part because she generated and implemented effective plans for medical training to reach underserved populations wherever they live.

Dr. Mobley was an elected delegate to the 1980 Democratic Convention; a delegate for the 1981 State House Conference on Aging; and has been both an elected and appointed delegate in other fields.  She has received numerous awards and special honors for her community involvement, leadership, volunteerism, and supportive service.  In 1980, Assemblywoman Teresa Hughes honored her for proven community work, a certificate for “Humanitarianism in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”.

Dr. Lillian Mobley has received special commendations from Congressman Augustus Hawkins, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Senator Bill Green, The American Lung Association, Compton Unified School District, and many other agencies and groups.  However, she has said that her greatest reward is the knowledge that she has helped, educated and promoted others. Mrs. Mobley especially takes pride in the accomplishments of youth and senior citizens, and in advancing health and education.  One never has to guess where she stands on a particular issue.  She is always honest and gives tremendously of herself to everything she tackles.  She is indeed a rare individual whose knowledge, foresight, and experience have been behind the accomplishments of many individuals and groups in this local community and across the nation.

Mrs. Mobley is a native of Macon, Georgia.  She is the wife of James Mobley, a mother of four children, three sons and one daughter, six grandsons, and five great granddaughters.  Her grandson, Taj Graham, is one of the many successes of The Charles Drew University Pipeline.  He recently graduated from the King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, and is doing well at the University of Syracuse (NY).  Taj says “My grandmother impacted my life in many ways.  Ranked high is her regard for human life and the importance of education.”
