In announcing the appointment, Board of Trustees Chairman, Bart H. Williams, Esq. said, “After an extensive national search, we are delighted that Dr. Kelly has accepted our offer to lead Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Kelly’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious; and
we look to her to lead us into the future. Susan is a dynamic, keenly intelligent, transformational leader who has a reputation for building strong, diverse and effective teams and then inspiring those teams to embrace a new future. She recognizes the undeniable strength of Drew’s mission focusing on the training of physicians and other healthcare professionals, partnering with the community and conducting cutting-edge research. Most importantly, Dr. Kelly will maintain our practical commitment to serving the medically underserved.” |

Dr. Kelly will be responsible for driving the strategic vision of the University. Working closely with the Board of Trustees she will ensure alignment of goals, objectives and resources. Dr. Kelly has been a University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, a professor in the University of Wisconsin System, a researcher and administrator in Australian higher education, management consultant, media commentator, successful author and community activist. In 1991, Dr. Kelly was elected President of the Australian Psychological Society where she initiated and led
its transformation. From 1998-2004, as Dean and Associate Provost of Outreach, E-learning and Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Dr. Kelly set the school on a positive and sustainable financial
footing while expanding and revitalizing its academic programs locally and internationally. Under her leadership the school saw dramatic growth in both its funding and community initiatives. |

According to Dr. Kelly, “The great appeal of the Presidency of Charles Drew is the opportunity to lead the university to new heights as a nationally recognized, mission-driven multicultural organization. The fact that graduates of Drew’s College of Medicine and College of Science and Health choose to work with medically underserved communities with greater frequency than virtually any other institution in America is rightly a source of great pride to the university. My challenge will be, first and foremost, to ensure that this and other aspects of the mission are met in an increasingly complex health care environment; and, second, to bring greater prominence to the University locally, nationally, and internationally while significantly building its resources. I’m honored to be given the opportunity to lead such an important institution at this key time in its history.” |

Dr. Kelly will take over from Acting President Thomas T. Yoshikawa, MD, who has previously served as Provost, Chief Operating Officer. Since 1995, Dr. Yoshikawa has held multiple positions with the University, including Program Director for Residency Training, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and Interim Dean of the College of Medicine. Under Dr. Yoshikawa’s leadership, the University has received praise for its work in addressing many concerns in the areas of resident supervision and faculty accountability. Board Chair Bart H. Williams added, “The University’s significant gains over the last year have largely been achieved through Dr. Yoshikawa’s tireless efforts. His commitment and dedication to serving the University’s mission are unmatched. His leadership has truly set the stage for a period of excellence and innovation at Drew.” |
