University Appoints Two New Deans
 
 

 

 
 

Dr. Louis L. Cregler
The national search for a new Dean of the College of Medicine at
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, has led to the appointment of Louis L. Cregler, MD, FACP, FACC.
 
Dr. Cregler, who will take up his new position on August 1st is currently Professor of Medicine and Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs at the City University of New York Medical School-Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in New York City.  The Sophie Davis School, like Charles Drew, plays a lead role nationally in preparing doctors from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, most of whom choose to serve underserved populations. Dr. Cregler received his  medical degree in 1975 from the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center at Brooklyn, College of Medicine, New York State’s largest medical school.  He is a member of   Alpha Omega Alpha - the Honor Medical Society. He was Chief
 
  Resident in Internal Medicine and Cardiology Fellow at the Mt. Sinai and Bronx VA Medical Centers. Dr. Cregler is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Angiology, American College of Physicians, and the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Cregler has lectured extensively on cardiovascular risk   factors in medically underserved populations and the effects of alcohol and cocaine abuse on the cardiovascular  system.  He has published more than 125 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, editorials, and book chapters in medical journals.  He received New York State’s Lewis H. Stack Award in 1987, the Louis B. Russell, Jr. Award in 1995 and in 1999, he received NY State Affiliate’s highest award for outstanding leadership, the Frank J. Sindelar Award. In addition, he is also a past member of AHA National Board of Directors and is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care.

  As Dean, Dr. Cregler’s primary duties will be to ensure the academic integrity and accreditation of all educational and residency programs, encourage excellence in teaching while fostering and supporting research, expand the numbers of Drew Medical students and lead the planning for the university to become a 4 year medical school in 5-7 years. Dr. Louis Cregler replaces Acting Dean, Ron Edelstein, Ed.D.  
     
 

Dr. Ron Edelstein
Playing a crucial role in setting the strategic course for the College of Medicine in the past year, Dr. Edelstein has been appointed to the newly created position of Dean of Academic     Affairs. Serving at Drew since 1978, he is an Educational and Clinical Psychologist. He received his BA from the University of California Berkeley and his MA and Doctorate from UCLA.  While Acting Dean, Dr. Edelstein was also Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine.  In his new position, he will focus on strategic planning, faculty development, development and maintenance of affiliation and articulation relationships, computer and information resource capabilities and academic business development.  Dr. Edelstein was honored on May 31st this year as one of six recipients of the 2006 David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Award for Excellence in Education.
