Dr. Henry W. Foster, Jr., Board 1st Vice Chair, is Professor Emeritus and former Dean at Meharry Medical College, Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and immediate past Chair of the U.S. Committee for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).From 1996-2001, he served as Senior Advisor to President Clinton on Teen Pregnancy Reduction and Youth Issues. From 1973-1990, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of OB/GYN at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. From 1990-1993, he was Dean of the School of Medicine and, beginning in 1993, he served for one year as acting President of the university. Dr. Foster is a recognized national leader in medicine, family planning, and education and has served on the boards of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and The Alan Guttmacher Institute. He is Planning Committee Chairman of Primary Care Meetings for the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation/Morehouse School of Medicine and a member in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1988, Dr. Foster received the First White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Faculty Award for Excellence in Science and Technology. As President Clinton's nominee for Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Foster proved his strength as an articulate spokesman on the issues of teenage fertility and adolescent pregnancy. His Surgeon General nomination was not rejected, but a filibuster was used to prevent a floor vote by the full Senate where its passage was assured. Dr. Foster joined Pathfinder donor trips to Peru, Kenya, and South Africa.
