Bart Harper Williams

Since November 1994, Mr. Williams has been a partner in the Los Angeles law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, where he began his career as an associate in 1987. Mr. Williams received his B.A. from Yale University in 1984 and his J.D. degree in 1987 from Yale Law School.

Mr. Williams has received widespread recognition for his legal work. In January 2003, he was profiled by The American Lawyer magazine in its national listing of American attorneys, entitled "45 Under Forty-Five - The Rising Stars of the Private Bar." In November 2003, Mr. Williams appeared on the cover and was featured in Black Enterprise magazine as one of the premiere African-American attorneys in the United States. In January 2004, Mr. Williams was selected by Law & Politics magazine as one of California's "Superlawyers" in the Commercial Litigation area, based on a survey of 65,000 California lawyers. In May 2002, California Law Business magazine listed Mr. Williams as one of the top 20 lawyers in the State of California under 40 years of age.

Mr. Williams has an active practice in complex civil litigation, including the areas of commercial contract disputes, attorney malpractice matters, employment law, product liability defense, the defense of False Claims Act or "whistle-blower" lawsuits, and trial work of all types. He has handled matters in the entertainment, securities, aerospace, pharmaceutical and energy industries, among others.

Mr. Williams has also used his expertise in complex criminal matters to develop a highly successful white collar criminal defense practice. Mr. Williams has separately represented (i.e., no criminal charges filed) numerous companies and individuals, including a federal judge, the brother of a former President of the United States, and several politicians and other public figures in connection with both state and federal corruption probes. In 1966, he was lead trial counsel for a senior Hyundai Motor America executive who was acquitted on criminal charges of violating federal campaign donation laws. Mr. Williams has also conducted internal corporate investigations for numerous companies, both in the U.S. and abroad. Those investigations have involved a variety of subject matters, including corporate embezzlement, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and potential securities laws violations.

Mr. Williams served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California from February 1991 to November 1994. He concentrated on complex criminal prosecutions involving allegations of fraud or other business crimes, racketeering and money laundering, and obtained convictions in 11 out of 11 jury trials.

Mr. Williams is active in professional and community organizations. In October 2004, Mr. Williams was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Children's Rights. He recently served as a member of the L.A. County Bar Association's Task Force on the Criminal Justice System. Mr. Williams also served as a Deputy General Counsel on the L.A. Police Commission's Independent Review Panel in the wake of the Rampart Division corruption scandal.
