Full Accreditation Awarded for the Department of Continuing Medical Education (CME) for Four Years, with a Commendation for Excellence.
The Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) announced today that it has received full accreditation of four years with a commendation for excellence by its governing body, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
The re-accreditation site visit which occurred on March 18, 2005, was attended by various members of the CME Advisory Committee and Advisory Task Force Committee, who provided excellent support for the site visit event.

Joaquin, MD, Geriatrics; Karen Johnson, MD, Psychiatry; Vidya Kaushik, MD, Internal Medicine; Bo Y. Suh, MD, Obstetrics & Gynecology; Thomas Tsou, MD, Emergency Medicine; Lina Wang, MD, Tumor Board; Kenneth E. In the July 2005 decision, the ACCME gave an “Exemplary Compliance” commendation on Element 2.2 of Essential Area 2: Educational Planning and Evaluation. The commendation stated, “The provider consistently uses needs assessment data from multiple sources to plan CME activities, including mortality/morbidity statistics, other patient data, learner surveys, government reports/guidelines, hospital privilege requirements, faculty perception/expert opinion, research findings, literature reviews and participant evaluation responses from past CME activities”.
Since its last accreditation four years ago, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Office of Continuing Medical Education conducted a total of 1,432 programs comprising 15 regularly scheduled -- weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly conferences, 16 annual live courses and an international annual live course event jointly sponsored with the National Kidney Foundation. In addition, participation totaled 19,076 physician faculty and 20,167 non faculty attendees in the last four years.
Dr. Ronald Edelstein, acting dean for the College of Medicine, CME director and senior associate dean for Academic Affairs stated, “Re-accreditation is due to the excellent work and educational activity of our staff, faculty, including our CME Advisory Committee, and Advisory Task Force. We are pleased at this recognition of our school meeting its mission in research service, and education to improve health care for the underserved in the county of Los Angeles and other underserved areas.”
The Office of CME consists of Dr. Edelstein, Edwin L. Cabatit, CME Program Coordinator, and Rosie Marie Connor, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, who served as Director of Continuing Medical Education for the previous four years.
The mission of the Office of Continuing Medical Education is aligned with that of Charles R. Drew
University, which is: “To conduct education and research in the context of community service in order
to train physicians and allied health professionals to provide care with excellence and compassion,
especially to underserved populations.”
