Admissions Requirements

  1. Official transcripts verifying Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited program in nursing.
  2. Licensure as a registered nurse in California (and home state of residence). Students must have CA RN license before start of clinical rotation.
  3. Completion of an introductory course in statistics.
  4. Proficiency in English is mandatory. All applicants whose first language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum overall score is 84; 24 is the minimum score in the speaking section, and 24 is the writing section minimum score.
  5. Recommended GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale based on most recent degree. 
  6. Three letters of recommendation are required. Letters should be from faculty members, professional colleagues, or work supervisors who can evaluate your potential for success in a graduate program. Recommendations from family, friends or other students are NOT accepted. Recommendations should address the following areas: a. relationships with work (paid or voluntary) associates, b. work competence, c. communication and interpersonal skills with persons of diverse backgrounds, d. leadership skills or potential, and e. values, ethical standards, responsibility, and initiative. The 3 letters of recommendation should be uploaded to the CDU online application system using PDF format. The Graduate Recommendation form may also be submitted.   7. Congruence of the applicant’s goal with the goals and resources of the School and University. A written personal goal statement is required, which is to be PDF-formatted and submitted on-line via the CDU application system. The goal statement is your opportunity to tell the admissions committee what you are planning to do with your career after you finish your masters degree. Before writing your goal statement, please carefully review information about the specialty on our web site so that you clearly indicate to the admissions committee that you are a fit with the specialty.
  8. A minimum of one year work experience as a registered nurse is desired.

Admission Requirements for International Applicants & Applicants who received their degree from another country

  1. Completion of a Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited program in nursing, if available in the country of origin.

Note: non-U.S. (and/or non-English) transcripts must be submitted for evaluation, please refer to the University catalog www.cdrewu.edu/catalog page 18 titled “International Admissions” for more information.

  1. Scholastic record comparable to that reflected by a 3.0 Grade Point Average.

Consult with Nursing Student Affairs for any questions on TOEFL examinations and scoring.
  4. International students need to be licensed in their country of origin. If they are going to perform direct patient care activities locally, they will need to obtain California registered nurse licensure before start of clinical rotation.
  5. One year of recent work experience as a registered nurse is required, related to the prospective field of study.

PLEASE NOTE: Admission requirements are only for California State Board of Registered Nursing. Other State Board Registered Nursing FNP certification requirements may be different.
