The National Medical Association (NMA) Region VI meeting was recently held at the Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage (in. The three day event entitled “Closing the Gap in Health Disparities -An Update on Progress” brought together NMA and Auxiliary National Medical Association (ANMA) members from throughout Region VI. The Conference opened with a dinner hosted by Dr. Richard Allen Williams, Chair of Region VI and Pamela F. Fobbs, Esq., Vice-President of Region VI of the Auxiliary to the NMA. Among those in attendance were Dr. David Carlisle, President of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU). The conference included speakers presenting topics such as: Practice Management; Women’s Health; HIV/AIDS; Medical Research; Mental Health; Diabetes; Allergy and Immunology; Immunization Update; Cardiovascular Disease Update; Tourette’s Syndrome; and Medical Workforce Diversity and Its Importance in Eliminating Healthcare Disparities.
This conference also featured a full schedule of other events and exhibits. CDU faculty members, Drs. Wilbert Jordan, Medical Director, /King Drew Oasis Clinic, Richard S. Baker, Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Keith C. Norris, Executive Vice President of Research and Health Affairs, and Arthur W. Fleming, Professor Emeritus CDU and NMA Region VI Trusteed were featured presenters at the conference. At a black tie dinner, Dr. Norris and Dr. Fleming received the NMA’s Leadership Award and Award of Merit, respectively. Dr. Norris received the Leadership Award for his leadership and dedication to closing the gap in health disparities. The Award of Merit, presented to Dr. Fleming, was given because of his commitment and devotion to helping eliminate health disparities. The award, a beautiful artistic sculpture, was bestowed upon both gentlemen by their peers. The awards are given to individuals who influence and are committed to making a change in the health status of our nation.
