Dean, College of Medicine

The Office of Medical Student Affairs is pleased to announce the acceptance of Angela Mayorga, 3rd year medical student in the Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program, as a fellow in The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship with the Scientific Education and Professional Development Program Office, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship is a one-year competency-based fellowship in applied epidemiology for medical students.  The program is designed to increase the pool of physicians with a population health perspective.  Each year, eight competively selected medical students from around the country spend 10-12 months at CDC in Atlanta.  At CDC they gain an in-depth understanding of applied epidemiology, the role of epidemiology in medicine and health, and the role of physicians in the public health system.  With the guidance of experienced CDC epidemiologists they perform epidemiological analyses and research, design public health interventions, participate in field investigations, and write an abstract and manuscript.  As a fellow, Angela will develop improved research and analytic skills and receive coaching on written and oral scientific presentations.  This challenging fellowship provides multiple skill-building opportunities for medical students.  As a graduate of The CDC Experience, Angela will have the potential to become a physician leader and substantially contribute to the quality of the health care system.

Angela is completing her third year and will start the fellowship in August 2012 where she will spend her fourth year.  CDU congratulates our very own rising star, Angela Mayorga!
