CDU and External Scholarships

CDU Scholarships are designed to help alleviate the financial burden of a health professions education. Students are encouraged to apply for both CDU and external scholarships. As you look through the list below please keep in mind that even though some of the deadlines for the scholarships have passed, many of them are annual awards with the same deadline each year. If the scholarship is a good fit for you, make note of its deadline so you can apply the following year. For CDU scholarships, students must complete and submit the CDU Scholarship Application and additional requirements as detailed within the eligibility requirements section of each scholarship

CDU Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 

CDU/KAISER SCHOLARSHIP 
The CDU/Kaiser Permanente Scholarship ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 and is open to all entering freshmen, transfer students and CDU continuing students in undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program. Entering students must be accepted to CDU or have an application for admission in progress.

Eligibility Requirements: 
This scholarship is open to students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON). Funding for this scholarship is provided by Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Southern California Region scholarship grant. Students will be selected using criteria focused on community background and upbringing, community activities, career goals, grade point average, financial need and letters of recommendation. To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must submit a completed CDU Scholarship Application, an essay addressing how criteria are met and two (2) letters of recommendation (academic, professional or from a community organization). These materials must be completed and submitted to the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships by the application deadline. Applicants are encouraged to submit a 1 to 2 page essay detailing how they meet the scholarship’s criteria. Suggested Essay Topic:  Building Healthier Communities. Deadline:  March 15th

GRADUATE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Graduate Education Scholarship ranges from $5,000 to$10,000 and is open to academically qualified graduate students to help close the ‘unmet need’ gap which is often a barrier to success. Entering and continuing graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Requirements: 
This scholarship is open to students in the College of Science and Health (COSH), College of Medicine (COM) and Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON). Funding for this scholarship is provided by the U.S. Department of Education Title III Program. Consideration will be given to students who demonstrate an unmet need in accordance with federal financial aid guidelines. Candidates must have had completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline. Deadline:  April 1st

OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
The Opportunity Scholarship is designed for all entering freshmen and transfer students to CDU. Candidates must be accepted to CDU or have an application for admission in progress.
Eligibility Requirements: 
This scholarship is open to students in the College of Science and Health (COSH) undergraduate programs that culminate in an Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science degree. Consideration is given to academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum within the context of a student’s academic environment. Additional factors for selection include, but are not limited to, leadership, community service, special talents, first generation college status, and academic achievement under difficult circumstances. For scholarship consideration, applicants must submit the CDU Scholarship Application and a 1 to 2 page essay detailing how they meet the scholarship’s criteria. Deadline:  May 1st

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP
The Academic Achievement Scholarship is designed for all entering freshmen and transfer students to CDU. Candidates must be accepted to CDU or have an application for admission in progress.
Eligibility requirements: 
This scholarship is open to students in the College of Science and Health (COSH) undergraduate programs that culminate in an Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science degree. Consideration is given to applicants with a demonstrated academic achievement in a college preparatory curriculum within the context of a student’s academic environment. Applicants with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and higher (out of a 4.0 scale), demonstrated community service and leadership, and a passion for serving underserved communities are encouraged to apply. For scholarship consideration, applicants must submit the CDU Scholarship Application and official high school and/or college transcripts. Deadline:  May 1st

ANY INFORMATION ON ELIGIBILITY AND HOW TO APPLY TO THESE SCHOLARSHIPS?
Dr. M. Alfred Haynes Endowed Scholarship Fund  
The Dr. M. Alfred Haynes Endowed Scholarship Fund will be made available to students who have demonstrated excellence in community health leadership. 
Dr. Henry Williams Endowed Scholarship Fund 
Named in honor of the first CDU Board of Trustees Chairman, the Dr. Henry S. Williams Endowed Scholarship Fund will support student scholarships. 

The Congressman Edward R. Roybal Endowed Scholarship Fund 
Named in honor of the late Congressman, The Congressman Edward R. Roybal Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarships for Latino students interested in the medical field. 

The Mrs. Lillian Harkless Mobley Presidential Endowed Scholarship Fund  
To honor the memory and contributions of Mrs. Lillian Harkless Mobley, Charles R.Drew University of Medicine and Science has partnered with The California Endowment on a challenge matching grant of up to $250,000. This endowment will ensure that the legacy of Mrs. Lillian Harkless Mobley lives on by awarding scholarships to CDU students who come from the very communities that Mrs. Mobley fought so hard to improve.

These databases are generally updated annually and list scholarships and other types of financial aid programs from multiple sources.
Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) – This searchable database provides detailed information about many of the state and federal programs available to medical and other health professions students.
CollegeBoard  -- Findscholarships, other financial aid and internships from more than 2,200 programs, totaling nearly $6 billion.
Fastweb.com – Offers a comprehensive scholarship directory for college freshmen, transfer students, veterans, bilingual students and some specifically designed for Hispanic and African-American students.
FinAid.org – A helpful guide to financial aid and scholarships.
Scholarships.com – This searchable database provides scholarship information by grade level, by major, by state, and some specifically designed for women, for sports, minorities and uniquely distinct individuals.
Zinch.com – Get personalized matches to over $1.9 billion in scholarships.
